Here are some tips for buying a used car –
Make sure your finance is in place
The first thing to do when looking for any kind of car is to work out your budget and make sure you stick to it. If you need to, look at the best deals to finance your car purchase, whether that is from your savings, a personal loan or vehicle finance. Work out how much you can put down as a deposit and calculate how much your can afford to pay back each month. You should work out all of these BEFORE starting to shop.
Choose the right dealership
Choosing a reliable and trustworthy is probably the best tip there is. Finding the right one will ensure you find the right vehicle and have a guarantee if there are any post-sale issues.
If you know the type of car you want you could try and look at specific dealerships, such as KAP Motor’s extensive collection of Toyota used cars at Brighton Centre.
Check the vehicle over
Check the vehicle for scratches, damage and if possible, try and ask someone who has a good knowledge of vehicles to come along to view it. Try and visit on a dry, bright day as any any damage will be easier to spot. Take your time to check each panel of the vehicle as well as the interior. If there is any damage it gives you the perfect opportunity to negotiate the price prior to purchase.
Make sure the paperwork is correct
Before agreeing to purchase a vehicle, make sure the dealership can provide a history of the vehicle such as it’s service history and any work that might have been done on it. Check the correct details are recorded on the V5C log book and make sure the chassis number matches up to the paperwork. It’s also important to ensure you have details of proof of ownership and evidence of end of finance agreements.
Take a test drive
Make sure you take the car for a lengthy test drive. Check it feels comfortable to drive and handles correctly. You’ll be able to check the ignition and listen out for any noises the car may make.
Make sure you have everything in writing
When you find the perfect car and agree a price, make sure you have everything in writing and obtain a full receipt. If the dealership is offering warranty with the vehicle, make sure you have a copy of everything that is covered.
